Can I Work While on a Student Visa in the UK — What Every Migrant Student Needs to Know

Studying in the UK is exciting — but knowing your working rights is essential.
This is one of the most common questions I get from migrants who have just arrived in the UK on a student visa.
And I completely understand why.
You have tuition fees to pay. You have rent. You have food. You have a life to build. And sitting in a classroom all day while your bank account gets smaller is stressful, really stressful.
The good news is yes, you can work while studying in the UK.
But before you start sending out CVs there are some important rules you need to know. Breaking them even by accident, can put your entire visa at risk.
So let me break it down for you simply and clearly.
The Basic Rule — How Many Hours Can You Work

Part time work helps you build UK experience while you study.
If you are studying at a UK university or higher education institution your student visa allows you to work up to:
20 hours per week during term time
And during your holidays and summer breaks:
Full time — as many hours as you like
This is the standard rule for most student visa holders in the UK.
But Here Is What Most Students Do Not Know
Not all student visas are the same.
The number of hours you are allowed to work depends on:
What level you are studying at Students studying below degree level such as foundation courses or English language programmes, may have different working hour restrictions or in some cases no permission to work at all.
Where your university is based Students studying at certain institutions may have restrictions written specifically into their visa conditions.
What your visa actually says This is the most important one. Your visa document itself will state your working conditions clearly. Before you apply for any job — read your visa conditions carefully.
What Kind of Work Can You Do
As a student visa holder you can work in most jobs in the UK.
Part time jobs that are popular among migrant students include:
Retail and supermarkets
Hospitality and restaurants
Customer service roles
Care work
Support work
Campus jobs at your university
Delivery and logistics
What You Cannot Do
There are certain types of work that student visa holders are not permitted to do regardless of hours:
You cannot be self employed Setting up your own business or working as a freelancer is not permitted on a student visa.
You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer This applies to paid professional roles in these fields.
You cannot work full time during term time Even if an employer offers you full time hours during term time, you are not permitted to accept. This is one of the most common visa violations and it can have serious consequences.
The Risk Nobody Talks About

Always know your visa conditions before accepting any job offer.
Working more hours than your visa allows even just a few extra hours — is considered a visa violation.
The consequences can include:
Your visa being curtailed
Being reported to the Home Office
Affecting future visa applications
In serious cases, being required to leave the UK
I am not saying this to scare you. I am saying it because I want you to protect yourself.
Always know your hours. Always keep track. And if you are ever unsure — check your visa conditions or speak to your university's international student support team.

The right guidance makes all the difference to your UK journey.
